An immersive irridiscent light installation
After the #showerthoughts project, LiteWerkz (Muhd Syahid, Daniel Yong, Kerine Kua, Jian Li, Jun Kang, Tan Wan Ting, Patrick Khoo, Ong Ying Ying, Yap Zi Qi) decided to go bigger by collaborating with 3M. The ideation and design for this project was formulated much more smoothly, after going through the same process of proposing, interviewing and securing the funding from the National Heritage Board, we began construction.
One key difference for this project was the much tougher construction requirements, in #showerthoughts, the 'mirror room' was outsourced to a construction company as it had to comply to the Building and Construction Authority. But for this project, we wanted to build an installation which was large enough for people to move into - structural strength and considerations became much more complex.
For this project my main effort was in the construction and transportation of the project. Due to the decision to utilize 3D printed joints as the connector for the beams that tessellate around the structure, we had the flexibility to achieve any angle and shape we wanted for the structure - but this came at the cost of introducing a swarm of brittle points for stress concentration and subsequent fracture (and fracture it did).
Through sheer perseverence and grit, we reinforced and repaired the structures across the entire Night Festival to ensure our patrons enjoy the installation. The installation was well-received and was featured on INHABITAT and covered by Patrick Khoo.
LiteWerkz is still active as of 2021 and you can check out more of their works at LiteWerkz Studio.
